Electric Vehicle Charging SERVICES

With the Federal Government doubling down on building out an electric vehicle charging grid to meet the 2030 and 2050 benchmarks, both public and private sectors are striving to understand the paradigm shift from gas to electric cars and the nuances of building charging stations.

AEI’s Experience

AEI has supported the growth of the electric vehicle charging industry with pre-construction permitting, natural resources, and environmental site assessments.

We are your valued partner in facilitating EV charging stations, repurposing existing gas stations, and supporting fueling stations of the future.

What Is an EV Consultant?

Electric vehicle charging consultants help both individuals and companies install charging stations on their property. Similar to other construction projects, the installation of an EV charging station comes with its fair share of complications that can add to the cost and timeline. EV consultants have the expertise to plan, develop, and manage the project while finding savings through incentives and avoiding preventable pitfalls.

Fun Fact

The EV market was valued at $208.95 billion in 2021 and is projected to be worth  $957.42 billion by 2030, registering a growth rate of 24.51% during the forecast period (2022 – 2030).

The Future of Alternative Energy Fueling

Creating an infrastructure for alternative fueling presents an opportunity for everyone from commercial real estate developers and landlords to entrepreneurs and business owners.

The U.S. Transportation Department has approved electric vehicle charging station plans for all 50 states, as well as Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, covering approximately 75,000 miles. As part of a bipartisan infrastructure package, the Biden administration designated $5 billion to states for a five-year plan that will fund EV charging stations along interstate highways. States have been given access to more than $1.5 billion to help build an approved network of EV charging stations in designated alternative fuel corridors.

With exponential growth being forecasted for electric vehicles, now is an ideal time to invest in alternative charging stations.

AEI can guide you through the full life cycle of your project from Concept to Charging.

Procurement, Siting, and Due Diligence

Selecting and procuring infrastructure for alternative energy fueling is multifaceted with a wide variety of factors that influence the entire process. There are typical construction requirements to consider, such as regulations, permits and zoning. But as an EV consultant, AEI also dives deeper into environmental considerations by performing an array of assessments and feasibility studies. As part of the infrastructure procurement process, we offer the following:

Feasibility Studies

Feasibility studies provide an analysis and evaluation of the financial investment in a solar powered charging station as well as the reporting and environmental planning required to maintain compliance.

Permitting and Agency Outreach

AEI offers assistance in obtaining the documentation for the proper permits and zoning required for procurement of alternative fueling stations as well as the proper permits for signage that will help drivers clearly identify them.

Owner’s Representation (through all stages)

AEI’s alternative energy consultants act as your representative from procurement all the way to management and operation.

ALTA Surveys

AEI conducts a licensed ALTA survey, including aerial mapping with topographic, tree height, and boundary surveys that show existing improvements of the property and utilities.

Energy Audit & Sustainability Consulting

A comprehensive analysis of the site’s energy consumption is completed to determine where, when, and how energy is being or will be used.

Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA)

In a Phase I ESA, AEI provides a detailed report researching and assessing the current and historical environmental uses of the property, performing environmental due diligence to mitigate the risks of any potential or existing environmental contamination.

Property Condition Assessments (PCAs)

A visual inspection is conducted of the site and a report is provided with documentation outlining our findings.

Physical Risk Assessment & Adaptation Consulting

Through a comprehensive process of safeguarding your interests, AEI consultants evaluate and implement processes that help reduce the impact of risk.

Phase II ESA

In a Phase II ESA, a quantitative assessment is performed in which samples are taken and tests are performed on the soil, soil vapor, and/or groundwater of a property, helping to determine whether there is a presence or absence of hazardous substances and petroleum products on the site.

Development & Construction

Minimizing the environmental impact of the installation of alternative energy fueling is important when keeping sustainability in mind. Our alternative energy consulting services in this phase of the development process include:

Wetlands Delineation & Permitting

AEI alternative energy consultants conduct an on-site evaluation to determine the property’s boundary between uplands and wetlands in order to receive environmental permitting.

Comprehensive Subsurface Investigations, Risk Assessment and Remediation

Hands-on testing and sampling are used to identify any contaminants that are likely present in soils, groundwater or vacant structures; determine any high-risk areas as well as the extent of contamination in these areas. Then a cleanup plan is developed to prevent and minimize exposures. If needed, remediation measures are taken, such as Underground Storage Tank (UST) removal for both hybrid gas & alternative fueling sites. The UST removal is done in a way that protects both human and environmental health.

Construction Risk Management

This comprehensive method of safeguarding your interests involves evaluating and implementing the processes that help identify, evaluate and alleviate risks as they arise.

Construction Compliance Permits

During the construction phase, AEI consultants aid in ensuring compliance with permit programs that control water pollution, such as the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System. We also help develop a plan to comply with requirements from the Storm Water Pollution Prevention (SWPPP), which serves to protect surrounding rivers, lakes, and coastal waters from storm water runoff.

Environmental Health & Safety Planning & Inspections

AEI verifies that the installation meets all requirements to ensure public health and safety.

Waste Management Handling & Removal

We provide solutions to responsibly dispose of any waste that results from the development and construction of your alternative fueling station.

Operations & Management

A safe and successful alternative fueling experience requires effective maintenance and management. AEI’s EV charging consultants provide reliable data to inform ongoing efforts to operate and manage your project through the following services:

Asset Management

AEI develops a plan with cost-effective solutions to operate, maintain, and repair the alternative fueling station.

Compliance Reporting

Our consultants ensure compliance with the latest energy regulations and codes.

Capital Planning Consulting

Our Capital Planning Consulting services assess the condition and remaining useful life of the systems and equipment, allowing for costing-out of the maintenance, replacement or enhancement of the alternative fueling station.

Challenges to Alternative Fueling Stations

Car manufacturers are offering more options than ever to consumers, a sign that alternative fuel vehicles are on track to be the norm for drivers in the not-so-distant future. As exciting as that is, there are many obstacles in the road ahead. From the charging infrastructure to buyers’ range anxiety, here are a few of the top challenges the industry is facing.

Infrastructure

Currently, there are not enough alternative fueling stations in the U.S., and the ones we do have aren’t distributed evenly across the country, which limits availability and accessibility. Additionally, the existing electric grid can not support the number of charging stations that will be needed in the future. And its reliance on fossil fuels is still a problem.

However, there are solutions out there. Funding provided to states by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program is assisting in the growth of infrastructure. AEI’s consultants offer NEVI users support through feasibility and siting for Alternative Fueling Stations nationwide.

Charger Times and Compatibility

There are currently three major levels of chargers available, all with different voltages. The lack of consistency across the board could be a huge obstacle in access to a universal charging system similar to gas stations.

Range Anxiety for EV Owners

The biggest worry for owners – and potential owners – of electric vehicles is not having enough energy to get to their destination, especially on a long road trip. An efficient charging infrastructure is a crucial necessity to remove range anxiety and draw in more buyers.
